Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS)

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship invites applications from international students to study a master’s degree at Leiden University in the Netherlands. These scholarships are fully funded and awarded to bright students.

The number and type of scholarships depend on the available budget of each department. Founded in 1575, Leiden University is one of Europe’s leading international research universities.

“Praesidium Libertatis,” which translates to “the stronghold of liberty,” is the motto of the university. Seven faculties in the sciences, arts, and social sciences are dispersed throughout Leiden and The Hague at this prestigious academic institution. The institution is home to more than 6,700 teaching staff members in addition to 28,130 undergraduate and graduate students.

• Courses are provided for all master’s degree programs in the following faculties: Humanities, Archaeology, Medicine/LUMC, Law, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Governance and Global Affairs, Science, Interfacultair Centrum voor Lerarenopleiding, Onderwijsontwikkeling en Nascholing (ICLON), African Studies Centre, and International Institute of Asian Studies.
• Duration of the Program The maximum study time allowed for a program that lasts one year is twelve months. The maximum time that may be spent in school for a program that lasts two years is twenty-four months.
  The deadline is February 1st for programs that begin on September 1st, and October 1st for programs that begin on February 1st.

Financial Support for Students

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LexS) offers the successful applicant a number of advantages, including the following:

• One-fifth, or € 15,000, of the total tuition charge
• The first € 10,000 of the registration cost
• Difference between the total tuition charge and the minimum required tuition fee

The Criteria for Eligibility

Candidates must meet all of the standards listed below to be considered for a Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LexS). These requirements are as follows:

• The mandatory language is English.
• Eligible International students from nations outside the EU and EEA
• During the student’s previous academic education, the student must have obtained exceptional study results that are relevant to the program that the student desires to enroll in. If past performance is any indicator, the student will place in the top 10 percent of their relevant program while studying overseas.
• Students are expected to have excelled academically throughout their prior schooling, particularly in courses that are directly applicable to the Master’s degree program for which they are enrolling. As a point of reference, the student graduated in the top 10% of his or her prior academic program, which is an indicator of their academic prowess. Note that you are not needed to provide verification of your rating; the purpose of this information is just to illustrate the degree of competition.
• The student will not be eligible for funding via the Dutch system of study grants and loans known as “Studiefinanciering,” since they will not possess a passport from a country that is part of the EU or EEA. • Masters program, for which the application process for the LExS is accessible to people of all nationalities.
• When a student decides to switch degree programs in the middle of their study program, there is no certainty that they will be able to continue participating in the LExS. The Faculty Selection Committee is the body that will be in charge of conducting individual request reviews and making the ultimate decision (s). In the event that the change takes place prior to the student registering for the study program, the LExS scholarship will be null and void, and the student will be required to submit a new application for the scholarship.
• Only for the time that the student is enrolled at Leiden University as a full-time student within the parameters of the study program is the LExS considered to be valid.
• It is not possible to transfer an LExS that has been awarded for the academic year that is mentioned in the decision letter to another academic year or to a subsequent intake that occurs within the same academic year. If a student who has been granted an LExS for the September (or February) intake makes the decision to push back the start date of their participation in the study program, the LExS will be cancelled. This policy applies whether the student is enrolling in the program in September or February. The Faculty Selection Committee is the body that will be in charge of conducting individual request reviews and making the ultimate decision (s).
• Except in the case of partial scholarships, where this must be verified in writing in advance, the student is not authorized to acquire any subsequent full scholarship for the same program. This, however, is acceptable for the student to get half scholarships. The student is responsible for informing Leiden
• University if they have been offered and accepted another full scholarship from another institution, such as the Netherlands Fellowship Program, Jean Monnet, or any of the other similar programs.
• When enrolled in a program that is longer than one year, the student must earn a minimum of sixty European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) units during the first year of study in order to maintain their eligibility for LExS in the subsequent academic year. The Leiden University Selection Committee shall determine the number of ECTS standards for good progress, as well as the amount of time and the way in which progress will be monitored, in situations where there is any question about the number of ECTS standards.
• It is acceptable for a student to simultaneously submit several scholarship applications while looking for financial aid. However, it is not feasible to combine the many scholarships that are offered by Leiden University or that it is a sponsor for. The following financial aid programs are affected by this announcement: The Orange Tulip is a collaboration between China and the CEU Praesidium Libertatis. In addition, it is not possible to combine the Leiden 
• Exchange Scholarship (LExS) with scholarships that are provided based on a bilateral agreement with educational institutions or with any other scholarship that Leiden University may provide or sponsor in the near future. These scholarships include any and all possibilities.
• The student is responsible for adhering to the restrictions that govern Dutch visas.
• Students who are accepted to a second Master program at Leiden University will not be eligible to receive the LExS; the only exception to this rule is students who are applying to a Master program that requires applicants to have completed a particular prior Master program or have relevant work experience.
• During the course of the academic year, students are expected to keep Leiden University apprised of any changes to their nationality, kind of residence permit, and/or potential eligibility for “Studiefinanciering” funding. This notification should take place as soon as feasible.
• Any claims for a refund of tuition costs will be submitted to Leiden University in the event that the student abruptly discontinues their studies. These requests will be analogous to the “Regeling inschrijving, college- and examengeld” for the relevant academic year. The student is responsible for delivering the de registration form to the Leiden University. Following that, if it is necessary, the student will be entitled to a refund of the tuition amount on a proportional basis, with the scholarship being deducted first.
• During their time at Leiden University, the student will be expected to participate actively in a variety of events that are designed to promote the LExS.
  The student is required to submit a “Acceptance Form LExS” in order to officially accept the scholarship that has been offered by LExS.

Instructions on How to Apply

If you would like to apply for this Leiden University Excellence Scholarship, please follow the procedures below:

1. You may submit your application to Leiden University’s Master’s program online and pay the application fee (if one is required) at the same time.
   Indicate that you desire to apply for an LExS within the area of your online application that is dedicated to scholarships.
2. Please ensure that your LExS motivation letter is uploaded in accordance with the instructions provided in your online application. You are to explain, in no more than 500 words and using the format of the Word document provided, why you believe you should be considered for the prize.
3. Make sure that your online application, which should include your LExS application, is submitted before the deadline for LExS applications.
4. If you are applying to more than one study program and want to apply for an LExS for each of them, be sure to state this explicitly in each application and attach an LExS motivation letter for each of the study programs you are applying to.

Leiden University Foundation Scholarship (LufS)

Leiden University in the Netherlands offers financial aid in the form of the Leiden University Foundation Scholarship (LufS) to foreign students from low-income countries so that they may attend school at Leiden. The scholarship not only pays for school, but also gives a stipend to help with living costs.

Benefits: Full tuition and a monthly stipend are provided through the Leiden University Foundation Scholarship. Foreign students from less-developed regions of the globe now have the means to attend Leiden University, where they may get an education on par with the best in the world, thanks to a scholarship program there.

• The student is required to submit a report to the Foundation Board detailing his or her time spent in the program within two months of the program’s conclusion. For clarity and consistency, the Foundation Board may make changes to the report before it is distributed.

Steps to Apply

The required paperwork includes:

1. Rationale and Goal Proclamation (in English)
2. Biography and Resume (in English)
3. Passport photocopy
4. Academic transcripts and/or degree certificates (with English translations)
5. References from two people, one academic and one professional, who have agreed to serve as references and have signed the document (in English)
6. Approval letter from Leiden University. Scholarship applications must be received by Leiden University by March 31st, thus prospective students should submit their September enrollment applications no later than February 1st. It may take Leiden University up to four to six weeks to complete an application. The Lutfia Rabbani Foundation will not consider candidates for a scholarship unless they have a letter of admission from Leiden University.
7. Information about the master’s degree program the student plans to complete at Leiden University (in English)
8. Please be as detailed as possible when creating your budget, making sure to account for tuition (and whether or not you have applied to additional scholarship money) and other essential costs that will arise over the school year. The annual maximum sum that may be granted is €30,000. This sample budget is available for your use.

Deadline to apply

Leiden University accepts applications all year round for the start of classes in September and February. Leiden University’s application review period typically takes between four and six weeks. In order to be considered for a scholarship from the Lutfia Rabbani Foundation, candidates must first get formal admission from Leiden University.
