A personal note from Sharon Peaslee: Dear Seattle Parents & Concerned Citizens, If you haven’t voted yet you may be wondering why you should. This school board race is urgently important. Seattle Public Schools is emerging from scandal, crisis and head-spinning turnover. Voting is your way of helping to support the ongoing progress of our schools and district. WASHINGTON STATE VOTERS HAVE REJECTED CHARTER SCHOOLS THREE TIMES And for good reason – 83% of charter schools perform no better, or perform worse than genuinely public schools. (Source: Stanford University CREDO Report, 2009, the most comprehensive study of charter schools to date.) Yet, a small group of wealthy individuals & political lobbyists – a number of them from outside Washington State – still want to push charters on our state. They paid $3 million to get this controversial idea on the ballot this November, hiring professional signature gatherers — not volunteers — and they continue to pour large amounts … Continue reading THE CHARTER-PUSHERS: WHO IS BANKROLLING THE $8 MILLION EFFORT (and counting) TO BRING CHARTERS TO WASHINGTON STATE?
Bill Gates is cranking it up a notch with his enablers, the League of Education Voters and Stand for Children. He and some other donors have put money into the pot to put a charter school initiative on the ballot this fall, Initiative 1240. The money so far has been contributed by: Mike and Jackie Bezos: $250,000 Bill Gates: $200,000 (Update: Bill Gates recently contributed an additional $800,000 to his cause and the Waltons recently contributed $600,000.) Paul Allen: $100,000 (can someone give this guy a clue?) Katherine Binder: $100,000 (who also contributed to Senator Patty Murray) Nick Hanauer: $25,000 … Continue reading Initiative I-1240: The money and the lies
This post has been burning up the internet and I finally slowed down enough to read this brilliant piece thanks to my co-editor Sue Peters who suggested that we publish it. To follow is an open letter written by United Faculty of Washington State President Bill Lyne titled Who Breaks a Butterfly Upon a Wheel to Nick Hanauer, founder of the League of Education Voters and financial backer of all things ed reform in the state of Washington. An Open Letter to Nick Hanauer Our friends over at Publicola have recently been hosting a rousing debate between big bucks Democrat … Continue reading An Open Letter to Nick Hanauer from Bill Lyne, President of United Faculty of Washington State
Nick Hanauer, one of the founders of the League of Education Voters (LEV) and a proponent of charter schools has lately decided to take it upon himself to publicly target teachers in general and the teachers’ union specifically in his quest to turn the state of Washington into charter school country staffed by none other than TFA temps putting students in front of computers for their online learning courses. As you might recall, just last week Rainier Beach High School said “Thanks but no thanks” to the paternalistic approach that LEV was taking in “helping” the children on the south … Continue reading The League of Education Voters is at it again. This time they’re going after the teachers.
In a race to promote charter schools and teacher performance evaluations based on test scores, it seems that the League of Education Voters (LEV) is hurting rather than helping the community that they purport they are trying to assist. With “friends” like these, who needs enemies? LEV is a 501c organization with no membership but the financial backing of Nick Hanauer, one of its’ co-founders, who at the moment is having a hissy fit because the Democrats who he has backed in Olympia are not doing his bidding, and Bill Gates who is all about charter schools. LEV has been … Continue reading Rainier Beach High School Responds to the League of Education Voters Attack on Its School and Community
To follow is information from Demian Godon, a parent of a child in the Seattle Public School System and a member of Parents Across America Seattle: In case you didn’t know, school board director is one of (perhaps the only) position that has NO campaign contribution limits. In Seattle, we have seen candidates raise astronomical amounts of money for their campaigns. This is remarkable given that the position is unpaid and is enormously demanding. In 2011, here are the amounts raised for the main contenders for the SPS board (according to http://www.pdc.wa.gov/MvcQuerySystem/Candidate/loc_candidates): Name Contributions MAIER PETER L 69648.13 (Incumbent) SUNDQUIST … Continue reading The Seattle School Board and Campaign Funding
