Stand for Children on Education Radio

In December of 2011, one of the programs on Education Radio focused on Stand for Children. With the Gates funded organizations Stand for Children (SFC) and the League of Education Voters (LEV) pushing for charter schools in our state and campaigning for state legislative candidates who are pro ed-reform, it seemed appropriate to once again take a look at this organization. To follow is the introduction to the radio show: Stand for Children or Stand for Profit? On this week’s show we take a look at Stand for Children, an organization that defines its mission as one of grassroots advocacy … Continue reading Stand for Children on Education Radio

Initiative I-1240: The money and the lies

Bill Gates is cranking it up a notch with his enablers, the League of Education Voters and Stand for Children. He and some other donors have put money into the pot to put a charter school initiative on the ballot this fall, Initiative 1240. The money so far has been contributed by: Mike and Jackie Bezos: $250,000 Bill Gates: $200,000 (Update: Bill Gates recently contributed an additional $800,000 to his cause and the Waltons recently contributed $600,000.) Paul Allen: $100,000 (can someone give this guy a clue?) Katherine Binder: $100,000 (who also contributed to Senator Patty Murray) Nick Hanauer: $25,000 … Continue reading Initiative I-1240: The money and the lies

Weekly update: Pushback from all sides, standing up to Stand for Children and the poverty pimps are at it again

Know your rights and protect them because someone is always around to try and take them away from you. During this week when we show our gratitude and respect for those who have died in wars, beginning with the Revolutionary War, to fight and sometimes die for our freedoms and do battle against enemies imagined, contrived or real, we also need to consider that we as citizens of this country need to remain vigilant in protecting our rights and privileges. As I have seen over the years, there are those who will want to take away our freedoms one way … Continue reading Weekly update: Pushback from all sides, standing up to Stand for Children and the poverty pimps are at it again

Decline to Sign: The charter school initiative

A charter school initiative was submitted by the League of Education Voters, Stand for Children,  DFER (Democrats for Education Reform)  and Republican State Senator Steve Litzow yesterday and will require 250,000 signatures by July 8, 2012 to be on the ballot in November. This piece was written by Parents Across America, Tacoma member Jennifer Boutell. Charter Schools Initiative Introduced Today, First Analysis A charter school initiative introduced today will be on the November ballot, if supporters are able to gather 250,000 signatures by July 6th.  I did a quick read through today, to see how it compared to the very … Continue reading Decline to Sign: The charter school initiative

Ed reform bullpucky bingo

Original post date: May 20, 2012 We’ve all heard these corporate style words and phrases coming out of the mouths of ed reformers. If nothing else, these folks do remain true to their script. I have heard these terms from leadership within the Washington State PTA,  the League of Education Voters, Stand for Children, Michelle Rhee, Arne Duncan,  the Broadies and many other corporate privateers. Unfortunately, these words and phrases have reverberated throughout the corporate sponsored media as well. On the Dump Duncan Facebook page, someone started a thread that has continued throughout the week and I thought that it … Continue reading Ed reform bullpucky bingo

An Open Letter from Former Stand for Children Activists About a Ballot Measure

If only the Stand for Children folks in our state had such convictions. The following is an open letter from former Stand for Children members in Massachusetts. As parents, teachers, and community members, we are Massachusetts grassroots activists for education. We read bills, testify at hearings, write letters to the editor, pore over budgets, speak at town meetings, make phone calls, and hold fundraisers. Many of us have done so for years. It was as part of this work and with great hope that we joined Stand for Children.  And—initially—Stand helped us do great work.  We cast a critical eye … Continue reading An Open Letter from Former Stand for Children Activists About a Ballot Measure

Thoughts on the Washington State PTA Convention

I had watched the charter resolution develop over the last several months from the time that the original plank was developed by Chad Mangendanz and Alison Meryweather through until the convention when Chad got up and talked about his visit to KIPP in San Diego as a school board member and how wonderful the school  was and how there was a graduation rate of 95% and on and on. Chad called charter schools another “tool in the tool box” during his impassioned plea for the vote on the resolution. The tool reference has become a worn out phrase used by … Continue reading Thoughts on the Washington State PTA Convention

The Washington State PTA Convention: Be There

There is a movement underfoot to take our rogue PTA back in the state of Washington. It has been taken over with the likes of Stand for Children and the League of Education Voters (LEV) who have been setting the agenda for the WSPTA for the last two years, an agenda which includes merit pay for teachers, evaluating a teacher’s performance based on test scores and the introduction of charter schools in our state. What is  even more frightening is that since Lisa MacFarland, who founded LEV, is now with WA DFER, Democrats for Education Reform, the stakes have gone … Continue reading The Washington State PTA Convention: Be There

I was kicked off the Washington State PTA listserv

Was I using inappropriate language? No. Was I being rude and derisive in my remarks? No Was I stating the truth? Yes Let’s begin this post with one fact, that the WSPTA received in March of 2011 $191,424 ” to assist with technology communications infrastructure to push for key policies in Washington” from the Gates Foundation. And what are Bill Gates’ “key policies”? Charter schools and teacher evaluations based on test scores. And what has the WSPTA been doing? Well, first there was the charter school plank that was quietly slipped in by the League of Education Voters (LEV) “Key Activists” … Continue reading I was kicked off the Washington State PTA listserv

Legislative Action Alert: Let’s Not Allow Stand for Children to Take Over Our Democratic Process

Heads up, everyone — Stand for Children, Incorporated, the out of state political lobbying operation bankrolled by Gates and others, is boasting that it charged down to Olympia this past week and forced our legislators to breathe life back into the poorly written, politically volatile charter school bill and the damaging “teacher evaluation” bills. Call and write your legislators ASAP if you want them to listen to you, and not front groups for the corporate ed reform machine. Paid political operations like Stand for Children, Inc., The League of Education Voters (LEV) and Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) are trying … Continue reading Legislative Action Alert: Let’s Not Allow Stand for Children to Take Over Our Democratic Process

Anti-Charter School Resolutions in Washington State Including one from a PTA

Even though the House and Senate charter school bills both died in committee last week the battle still rages on. This in part due to Rodney Tom, State Senator for Bellevue, who halted the review of all bills brought into the Senate education committee because the charter school bill was not allowed review and also due to the continued push by Stand for Children and the League of Education Voters. All have vested interests is seeing a charter school bill pass in our state this year. Unfortunately their interests have nothing to do with our children. Several resolutions have been … Continue reading Anti-Charter School Resolutions in Washington State Including one from a PTA
