The Weekly Update: NPEC gives out the Bunkum Awards for bogus studies, Duncan gets an “F” on education equity, Edushyter’s Eduttantes and much, much more

The Weekly Update for the news and views you might have missed We definitely had a better time outside than the audience did inside on Tuesday evening at the Rhee event. In fact, some members of the audience, after Rhee’s performance, came out and told protesters that they were on our side after hearing Rhee. I guess Rhee needs to work on her message. It could be that Rhee’s message fell flat because what she is professing doesn’t work…really. From Democracy Now: DEPT OF EDUCATION PANEL SAYS SCHOOL SYSTEM BURDENING LOW-INCOME CHILDREN: A federal commission has found U.S. education policies … Continue reading The Weekly Update: NPEC gives out the Bunkum Awards for bogus studies, Duncan gets an “F” on education equity, Edushyter’s Eduttantes and much, much more

So much for school choice in New Orleans and elsewhere

Karran Harper-Royal, an advocate for all children in public schools, works tirelessly in New Orleans and beyond in ensuring an equitable education for all against many odds. Mrs. Harper-Royal has begun a collection of video recordings of herself and others as they describe the reality of the so-called miracle of New Orleans charter schools. The first video is one of Mrs. Harper-Royal as she speaks in front of the school board in New Orleans in 2011 when promises by Paul Vallas, then the superintendent of the New Orleans School District, were not kept. By the way, Paul Vallas is another … Continue reading So much for school choice in New Orleans and elsewhere

The Weekly Update for the news and views you might have missed Alice Walton of the Walton family, who are big contributors to the proliferation of charter schools and vouchers, is the same Alice Walton who has contributed $1.7M, and counting, to the charter school Initiative 1240 in Washington State. The Walton’s are investing heavily now in Louisiana where school vouchers are now legal and the Walton’s, along with some of the other wealthy few, want to ensure that charter schools not only remain in place but proliferate as the article in The Nation below describes. A look at KIPP, Michael Feinberg, NCTQ and Bill Gates

Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) is in a rush to now dumb down education in New Zealand even though New Zealand and Australia have higher international test scores than the US and the majority of other nations. KIPP is trying to worm their way into New Zealand using the same old phrasing such as “failing schools” and “ineffective teachers” and pushing the idea of hiring “unregistered” (cheap) staff to populate charter schools. See the TV New Zealand’s program The Hard Sell of Charter Schools featuring Parents Across America board member Karran Harper-Royal and Mike Feinberg, co-founder of KIPP. Fortunately in … Continue reading A look at KIPP, Michael Feinberg, NCTQ and Bill Gates

Education as a Right Wing Wedge Issue and How to Stop It : Race and Education Reform

Netroots Nation presented a panel on the subject of privitization of our public school system in June during the Netroots Nation Conference. To follow is an introduction about the topic and the video of the panel discussion. For many low-income areas and communities of color, education is regarded as the key to rebuilding our communities and overcoming injustice. So why has education policy become so divisive? In this session, panelists will draw on their experience and expertise as public school teachers, parents and advocates to guide attendees toward an understanding of the ways in which education reform has been used … Continue reading Education as a Right Wing Wedge Issue and How to Stop It : Race and Education Reform

Weekly Update: The charter school debacle in New Orleans, eight year olds grading their teachers in Georgia and more on Bill Gates

The Weekly Update: News you might have missed. With Initiative 1240, the charter school  initiative backed by Bill Gates who has provided $1M to the cause, looking like it will be appearing on the ballot this fall, more folks are starting to talk about charter schools in our state. Fortunately the word so far is that most people don’t want charter schools, just like the last three times it was voted on in a general election. Folks in our state want their schools to be adequately funded. Period. Someone sent me this comment that was posted on the Seattle Schools … Continue reading Weekly Update: The charter school debacle in New Orleans, eight year olds grading their teachers in Georgia and more on Bill Gates

Media Alert: Parents to hold press conference at 2 p.m. today on steps of the Capitol in Baton Rouge regarding charter schools

Baton Rouge, LA —  Speaking from a parent perspective, Parents Across America NOLA and people representing several other parent organizations will hold a press conference today at 2:00 p.m. on the steps of the Capitol in Baton Rouge. They have set their focus on concerns with HB 976, with its heavy emphasis on the expansion of charter schools, which they see as pitting parents against parents in the long run. Other major concerns include concern for equitable treatment of children with special needs. Several parent organizations plan to unite at the Capitol Thursday, when HB 976 is to be debated … Continue reading Media Alert: Parents to hold press conference at 2 p.m. today on steps of the Capitol in Baton Rouge regarding charter schools

Weekly Update: March and rally at the Gates Foundation in Seattle, profiteering in Chicago and school “choice” in New Orleans

This photo was taken in front of the Gates Foundation in Seattle this week by members of Social Equality Educators. And so was this “No TFA” photo: Yesterday was the March 1st National Day of Action for Education in Seattle and in many other parts of the country. There was a march from downtown Seattle to the headquarters of the Gates Foundation on the border of the downtown core. In front of the Gates Foundation, there was a teach-in, a grade-in and a policy throw-down although I don’t think that Vicki Phillips was able to make it. We will be … Continue reading Weekly Update: March and rally at the Gates Foundation in Seattle, profiteering in Chicago and school “choice” in New Orleans
