About Famous Seattle College School Districts
The Seattle Colleges District (formerly known as the Seattle Community College District), also known simply as Seattle Colleges, is a group of colleges located in Seattle, Washington.
It consists of three colleges—North Seattle College, Seattle Central Academy (including Pacific Tower Health Education Center, Wood Technology Center, and Seattle Maritime Academy), South Seattle College (including Georgetown Campus and New Hawley Learning Center).
Together, these colleges make up the second largest institution of higher education in the state, behind the University of Washington, and many graduates transfer to the university.
The district’s origins date back to 1902, when Broadway High School opened on Capitol Hill. It was a traditional high school until the end of World War II, when it was transformed into a career and adult education institution for veterans who wanted to finish high school but were no longer fit for regular schooling.
Thus, in 1946, Broadway High School was renamed Edison Technical School. Edison began offering college-level courses after 21 years and reorganized as Seattle Community College in September 1966.
