Weekly Update: Week of October 31, 2011

There was so much going on this week that I don’t know where to begin.

To all who send me information, a big thank you. Do keep those cards and letters coming.

Let’s start with the action that the Chicago Teachers’ Union and Stand Up Chicago did, a mic check for Governor Perry.

You’re gonna love this.

And speaking of governors, Governor Gregoire, faced with a slashed state budget is recommending the following cuts to the 99%.

    • Eliminate the Basic Health Plan, ending subsidized health care to 35,000 low-income individuals.
    • Trim 15 percent from the support the state provides to colleges and universities.
    • Eliminate school bus transportation.
    • Increase class sizes.
    • Reduce the number of school days in a school year.
    • Eliminate full day kindergarten.
    • Suspend state work-study programs.

To see the entire list of proposed cuts pertaining to education see Budget Reduction Alternatives: Education.

Who said that school funding didn’t matter?

Which leads me to Why You Should Attend an Occupy Meeting.

And if you are still not convinced, listen to Chris Hedges and Robert Scheer discuss the subject of class struggle on truthdig radio.

Speaking of Chris Hedges, here is a speech that he gave in Zucotti Park yesterday morning during the Peoples’ Hearing of Goldman Sachs that he held with Dr. Cornell West. Later that day he was arrested in front of Goldman Sachs after protesters had marched to the offices

Speaking of being arrested, here is a recount of a 70 year old retired teacher who was arrested and taken to the Tombs where she was detained for 30 hours in New York this week during an Occupation at a bank.

Even though there were arrests, and lots of them, there were some great moments this week as shown on the Atlantic website. I will leave you with these awesome photo’s from around the world of the Occupation Movement.
